MIN and MAX

The MIN and MAX functions are used to find the smallest and largest values in a range of numbers. These functions are very useful for analyzing data quickly.

1. MIN Function

The MIN function returns the smallest number in a selected range.

Structure:

=MIN(range)

Example:

=MIN(A1:A10)

This formula finds the lowest value from cell A1 to A10.

When to Use MIN:

  • Find lowest marks in a class
  • Identify minimum sales
  • Determine smallest expense
  • Track lowest temperature

2. MAX Function

The MAX function returns the largest number in a selected range.

Structure:

=MAX(range)

Example:

=MAX(A1:A10)

This formula finds the highest value from cell A1 to A10.

When to Use MAX:

  • Find highest marks
  • Identify maximum sales
  • Determine highest profit
  • Track peak performance

Important Points

  • MIN and MAX work only with numeric values.
  • Text values are ignored.
  • Empty cells are ignored.

Example

If cells A1 to A5 contain:

45
78
32
90
60

Then:

  • =MIN(A1:A5) → 32
  • =MAX(A1:A5) → 90

Why MIN and MAX Are Important

They help you:

  • Analyze performance quickly
  • Compare data efficiently
  • Identify extremes in data
  • Support decision-making

MIN and MAX are simple yet powerful functions that are widely used in data analysis and reporting.
