It is a process used in data management and data warehousing. ETL helps organizations collect data from different sources transform it into a useful format and load it into a storage system such as a database or data warehouse. This process makes data easier to analyze and use for decision making.

WHAT IS ETL

ETL is a method used to move data from one or more sources into a central system. The data collected from different platforms may have different formats or structures. ETL processes clean organize and convert the data so it becomes consistent and useful for reporting analysis and business intelligence.

THREE MAIN STEPS OF ETL

EXTRACT

The extract step is the first phase of the ETL process. In this stage data is collected from multiple sources. These sources may include databases spreadsheets cloud platforms applications or APIs. The goal of extraction is to gather raw data without changing its original structure.

Examples of data sources include SQL databases Excel files customer management systems and online applications.

TRANSFORM

The transform step is the most important part of ETL. In this phase the raw data is cleaned organized and converted into a structured format. Data transformation ensures that the data becomes consistent accurate and useful.

Common transformation activities include removing duplicate records correcting errors filtering unnecessary data standardizing formats and combining data from multiple sources.

LOAD

The load step is the final phase of the ETL process. In this stage the transformed data is moved into a destination system such as a data warehouse database or data lake. Once the data is loaded it becomes available for reporting analysis dashboards and machine learning applications.

There are two common types of loading. Full load means loading all data every time the process runs. Incremental load means only new or updated data is loaded.

WHY ETL IS IMPORTANT

ETL plays a critical role in data driven organizations. It helps companies collect data from many systems and convert it into meaningful information. Without ETL it would be difficult to analyze large amounts of data from different sources.

ETL also improves data quality supports business intelligence tools and helps organizations make better strategic decisions.

EXAMPLES OF ETL TOOLS

There are many ETL tools available that help automate the ETL process. Some popular tools include Talend Informatica Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services and Apache NiFi. These tools allow developers and data engineers to design data pipelines and manage large scale data processing.

CONCLUSION

ETL is a fundamental concept in data engineering and data analytics. It allows organizations to collect transform and store data efficiently. Understanding ETL basics is important for anyone working with data analytics business intelligence or data science.

Home » SQL for Data Engineering (SQL-DE) > SQL in Data Warehousing > ETL Basics

["post-139","lesson","type-lesson","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
